A lot of people panic at the end of semester when exams come round. The amount of effort put into study is a highly individual thing, and often doesn’t change much over time! What you can easily change is the stuff you put in your brain, easing the process somewhat, stepping up your focus and motivation.

The obvious nutritional basis is important. B vitamins and omega-3’s are both linked to improved cognition, and b vits are vital to a vast range of brain processes. DL-phenylanine, and l-tyrosine, the precursors to dopamine help with alertness and motivation - I would definitely include these in a study stack because of how crucial motivation and attention can be. Inositol, is a messanger subsystem, and is also a good choice for a nutritional clear thinking and alertness.  Vegetables, fruit (b vits), fish (omega’s and tyrosine) and nuts (inositol) are good sources for these. You also probably know about iron already.

Album Review: UNKLE - "Where Did The Night Fall"

Written by Drael

The UNKLE duo did some kick ass ninja-tune stuff back in the day along with DJ Shadow who was once in the band, as some of you may remember. And admittedly they have struggled to find a new sound direction since then. Here, we see a venture into the realm of slightly indie vocal stylings, mixed with a much more organic sound.

The electronic composition, is well, it's not exactly like the old ninja-tunes stuff. Its similarly heavy on organic sounds, but there aren't really any breaks here. The bit of guitar really adds to the organic sound also, and the drums, while programmed, are all the real sounding kind - A very rolling, upbeat, rocky, almost tribal rhythm. Very different from their older stuff.

Absinthe, The Green Fairy (la fée verte)

Written by Drael

Absinthe is a very strong, green colored distilled liquor, made from wormwood, anise, fennel and other herbs. It’s unique because the wormwood provides some “added” effects, via a chemical called Thujone, and very cool because of the ritual of drinking it, and its “bad boy” history with Bohemian artists, writers, poets and such (The likes of Hemmingway, Van Gogh, and Crowley). To drink it properly, there are two little rituals, the French method, and the Bohemian method.

The French Method is as follows: You put the Absinthe into a glass. You put a spoon, with holes or slots, on top of the glass, and put a sugar cube in it. Then you pour chilled water over the spoon (ordinary temperature still works) - until its fairly diluted with the water. With a true Absinthe, this will turn the drink cloudy, which is essentially some of the flavors precipitating out - making it nicer to drink. These are the other herbs, so if a liquor is made from wormwood only, or not made properly, this process doesn’t do anything at all, and it won’t turn cloudy.

Classic Entheogens: San Pedro & Morning Glory

Written by Drael

These are some of staple culturally important psychedelic plants, for Entheogen collectors (Although they are equally popular in regular gardens).

Morning Glory and one of its relatives are two of the core sacred Entheogens of the Aztecs, who used it in shamanic healing rituals, and as an anesthetic and for medicine. It was also used for a variety of magical ointments.

The Aztecs believed that these plants were a means of connecting the Sun Gods, some believing a highly evolved spirit lived within the plant. The seed preparation was crushed by a 10-15 year old virgin, to allow the seeds to “speak”. The shaman would then imbibe the potion, and “die as a person, to be reborn as a Shaman”, then able to speak with the Gods.

The straight dope on Dopamine

Written by Drael

Dopamine is involved in the mechanism of a bunch of different drugs, including coke, speed, MDMA, cigarettes, anti-psychotics & also indirectly, opiates and cannabis. As a neurotransmitter it’s involved in a range of brain functions: Cognition and memory, sociability, voluntary movement, motivation and attention, sleep, memory & reward sensations.  It is connected to pleasure from food and sex, although cannabinoids and opiates also play a role in pleasure sensations.

Science and Drug News

Written by Drael

Okay, lets start with the science stuff. Nissan plans to mass launch an affordable and usable fully electric car, the Leaf. A girl who never ages is considered a possible key to the aging mystery. See that here.

The Chinese have made and iPad knock-off called the “iPed”. New research uses microbes to generate clean hydrogen. And how acupuncture might relieve pain.

The possible discovery of a whole new class of particles, via a particle accelerator might get the geeks like me going.

They have developed a new helium filled Airship (yeah like a old fashioned zeppelin!) for use in research.

Okay, now onto the drug news. First up, toxicologists have linked one of the deaths in the UK, with Mephedrone. Keep in mind though, the many years of use before such an event, and the two other deaths have been ruled as unrelated to Mephedrone. Read about it here.

Not entirely new news, but a contaminant in cocaine may cause flesh rot! Read it here. Like the UK, Ireland has just banned a bunch of legal highs.

An American company is working on a drug test for JWH-018, to test for use of things like spice.

And The last interview with Alexander Shulgin (The drug god is pictured above) , is here.

Incense Review: Kronic Purple Haze

Written by Drael

Smell - Lightly flowery lotus, poppy or other common flower taste with a slight spicy harsh note. If the smell made its way to taste, we would be onto a winner.

Texture - Fluffy with black bits, medium fluffy, not so much as TE. Occasional blue bits too.

Taste - Still, like the others, a little harsh and “kronicy”. Not as bad as the original. Light flowery aspect though also. If they lost the harshness and stuck to the floweriness I’d be happier.

Buzz - Probably stronger or similar to Kronic skunk. I’m not sure if its slightly stronger, or simply more smoke-able.

Overall - Because its nicer and more smoke-able than some of the other similar blends, its not a bad option for a medium/strong level smoke, because of nice smell, okay taste and 1.25 gram quantity, I’d rate it as better than space, aroma and Kronic original/skunk but not as good as the better ones. Mid-level, but pretty good for mid-level.

Party Pill Review: Hypnotic

Written by Drael

Okay, this is my first time on a pill with Glaucine. Glaucine is a yellow horned poppy extract said to be very mildly psychedelic and quite sedative. I dropped two of these hypnotics (which is the recommended dose for a bigger person).

Starts off more relaxed, with some stimulation. Little urge to do anything. As it first starts, I'm thinking, this is nice, smooth relaxed, and have high hopes this is smoother feeling.

As it kicks in more fully, I feel kinda spacey, waves of relaxation and stimulation, quite strong and light headed....Kinda giddy relaxed feeling hit me like a wall, couldn’t keep writing the reveiw for a bit, mangled, spacey, sedated & had to just sit! So the come up is very quick...
